Balancing Bathtubs in Math Class
نویسنده
چکیده
What of the knowledge that is required to understand dynamic systems is covered by the traditional school math curriculum? In this study, the Booth Sweeney and Sterman (2000) bathtub tasks and the Jensen and Brehmer (2003) rabbits-and-foxes task were dissected into aspects. Questionnaires with tasks tapping into the identified aspects were administered to first-semester university engineering students and hypotheses were formulated concerning their performance, based on an analysis of the high school mathematics curriculum. The results largely conformed to the expectations. However, many participants misunderstood the questions addressing ability to perform control operation, which is required by the rabbitsand-foxes task. This is something that is not taught in schools, and we do not know what questions to ask because we know too little about how people think about control. We would also need to test the tasks with different participant groups, to learn about what aspects are learnt under what circumstances.

Background Intersectoral action is often presented as essential in the promotion of population health and health equity. In Norway, national public health policies are based on the Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach that promotes whole-of-government responsibility. As part of the promotion of this intersectoral responsibility, p...
متن کاملLoad Balancing in Quorum Systems
This paper introduces and studies the question of balancing the load on processors participating in a given quorum system. Our proposed measure for the degree of balancing is the ratio between the load on the least frequently referenced element and on the most frequently used one. We give some simple sufficient and necessary conditions for perfect balancing. We then look at the balancing proper...

This paper address a special class of generalized assembly line balancing in which it is assumed that there are two groups of workers: skilled and unskilled ones. The skilled workers are hired permanently while the unskilled ones can be hired temporarily in order to meet the seasonal demands. It is also assumed that more than one worker may be assigned to each workstation. To show the adv...
